How Do Changes in Your Cropping Plan Impact Your Management Program?

Agronomy

With the wild weather events we’ve seen so far this year, the farm plan you made in the fall may have changed considerably (a few times) as you’ve started planting. That means that this year, it will be as important as ever to keep good records of what’s going where, and to communicate those new plans to everyone involved in your operation. This can help eliminate future problems and help you get the most out of every acre you plant in 2019.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you’re rolling this spring:

Do you know the little details about your corn hybrids?

  • Get familiar with the hybrids and traits you’re planting. If you take advantage of a SmartStax® RIB Complete® corn blend (STXRIB) or Herculex® Insect Protection products (HX), these ARE resistant to Liberty® herbicide (glufosinate). However, if you planted a VT Double PRO® RIB Complete® corn blend (VT2PRIB or DGVT2PRIB, if it contains the DroughtGard® trait), they are NOT resistant to glufosinate.
  • Balance® Flexx herbicide or Corvus® can be applied to corn up to the V2 stage of growth. However, once the corn has emerged NO crop oil concentrate (COC) or methylated seed oil (MSO) should be used or crop injury can occur. Also if you’re using glyphosate in your burndown, only a half rate of glyphosate can be used after crop emergence.
  • Acuron® herbicide can be applied to corn up to 12 inches tall. Do not use any COC once corn has emerged as crop injury can occur.

How familiar are you with your soybean varieties?

  • Soybeans also have many traits to keep track of:
    • Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans are resistant to dicamba and glyphosate but NOT resistant to 2,4D. They can be treated with Xtendimax® herbicide, Engenia® herbicide, Tavium® Plus VaporGrip® Technology herbicide, or Fexapan from preplant to 45 days after plant only.
    • Enlist E3™ soybeans ARE resistant to 2,4D, glufosinate and glyphosate but not resistant to dicamba.
    • Soybeans with the LibertyLink® gene are not resistant to glyphosate, but glyphosate can be used prior to emergence.
  • Commonly used soybean herbicides can cause crop injury if applied after soybean emergence, including herbicides containing sulfentrazone, such as Authority® herbicides, Broadaxe® herbicide and Sonic® herbicide. Crop injury can occur if soil that has been treated with these herbicides receives a hard rain which splashes the soil containing the herbicide onto the plant at emergence. The window of damage is small, but it shows up in fields nearly every year, resulting in some stand loss.

PRO TIP: Today’s weed size ranges from newly emerged, small weeds to weeds nearing label height restrictions. It would be a good practice to use a minimum of 15 gallon per acre (GPA) work to assure optimum coverage of herbicides used.
