Get a better look at your farm fields with precision mapping

Analyzing your farm’s yield, application and planting maps is a great place to start when evaluating performance on a given field or across your whole farm. Maps let you use your knowledge of a field to quickly find places for improvement. What can precision mapping do for your farm?

1. Help you understand your yield by field.

How Has a Field Performed Historically?

Your yield maps reveal the relative strongest and weakest yielding areas for each of your fields. Combining yield maps with soil, elevation, population, and application maps can provide insight into what's driving different yield performance within your field.

Understanding what level of yield you’ve achieved on a field over time will help you make better, more informed decisions. Having access to multi-year yield averages on each field will reveal which problem areas were unique to a particular season, like hail damage or pest pressure, versus ones that are long-term yield issues to address, like drainage issues or soil pH.

FBN Maps automatically creates a three-year yield average map for each of your fields that has enough historical harvest data.

2. Help You Prepare for Planting.

How Did Your Seeding Rate Impact Yield?

Small changes in seeding rate can deliver big returns in cost savings or yield gains. There are many factors worth considering when altering your seeding rate, including yield goals, seed cost, recommended seeding rates, and seed performance. Switching varieties may also allow you to drop your seeding rate without sacrificing yield. By knowing both your field and seed population response, you can create your prescriptions with confidence.

Find the Optimal Seeding Rate for Every Field and Seed

Seed is expensive, but with the combined power of FBN Analytics, FBN Maps and our Analyze My Operation Tool, you can feel confident that you’re getting the most out of your investment. Find your optimal seeding rate for every variety on every field with Yield by Seeding Rate analytics, then see how well you hit the mark with your Seeding Rate map.

Did Your Planting Speed Affect Your Yield?

There are quite a few unexpected factors that might be affecting your yield, including your planting speed. Taking a look at the recorded speed of your planter compared to your yield might provide some insight on the optimal speed for getting seeds in the ground.

Set Your Farm Speed Limit with FBN Analytics

Use your Planting Speed map, found in the planting section of Analyze My Operation alongside your FBN Maps to determine how planting speed may have impacted your yield over the past few years, or evaluate the work of your custom planting professional. Paired with the yield by planting speed data available through FBN Analytics, you can set the optimal planting speed on your operation.

How Accurate Was Your Planting Prescription?

Using planting prescriptions requires a significant investment and can lead to big returns. However, there’s no way to know if it’s raising your yield (or even being executed correctly) if you don’t review your prescriptions against what actually happened in the planter. You’ll want to make sure that the planned prescription made it onto your fields, and more importantly, that the prescription led to higher yields or lower costs at the end of the season.

Evaluate Your Prescriptions with FBN Maps

With Target Seeding Rate Maps, your precision planting prescriptions are always at your fingertips. Plus, you can use the Compare Maps feature to see not just what you planned, but how accurately your prescription was followed, giving you valuable insight on the value of prescriptions and an idea of where improvements can be made.

Mapping a Field's Potential

Through the power of FBN Analytics, you’ll have access to Potential Yield Improvement Maps, which will help you see where you may be able to increase yields by changing management practices! FBN crunches huge quantities of data to compare your performance across the field with other growers that farm similar ground and finds areas that could potentially be improved.

FBN members can identify areas to save money by changing seeds or populations, or where investing in drainage or irrigation might be the right investment to seriously improve yield.

Dive Deeper with FBN Yield Potential

Trying to find the best seed variety for a field? That was one of the first ways farmers used the power of the FBN network!

FBN Yield Potential searches millions of acres of data on the network to find the varieties that have performed best on the soil types in your field. You’ll see a list of seeds along with their estimated impact to your yield and revenue/acre. Only plant a few brands? No problem! Simply filter the list.

PRO TIP: Making the case to an investor or landlord to invest in your ground? It’s easy to print all your maps, including Potential Yield Improvements, directly from your FBN account to take to a meeting, or save a PDF version to your computer to share digitally.

3. Help You to Evaluate Your Equipment and Services.

Did Your planter, Combine or Sprayer Do What You Expected?

Whether you’re planting, applying chem or crop protection, or harvesting yourself (or using custom services), evaluating how your equipment or service provider is vital. Is your fertility program effective? Are your service providers applying products correctly and doing the job you paid for?

Start by taking a closer look at application and yield maps. Did incorrect application or seeding rate have a big effect on yield in a certain part of your field? Was the inconsistency or inaccuracy a result of mishandling, field conditions, or aging equipment that needs to be repaired or replaced?

See What Goes on Your Field with New Application Maps

Use Application Maps in FBN Maps to determine potential weak spots in the field, or side-by-side with a yield map for insight on why a certain area of the field under-performed.

PRO TIP: Did your final yield results match your weigh tickets? If not, it might be time for re-calibration, a software update, or to replace your sensors or monitor. You can always re-calibrate your yields in your FBN account in the My Data tab. It’s simple — just input your weigh ticket yields and your data and maps will be updated automatically.

2019 crop moisture and harvest maps FBNHow Did Crop Moisture Play Into Your Harvest?

Crop moisture is always a challenge to determine accurately around harvest, but how well you do it can have a serious impact on the price you get at the elevator. This season, looking back at where a field has historically retained moisture, and where it has historically dried quickly, will give you a better idea not only of which fields to harvest first to capitalize on drydown, but may even give you insight on how to open up a field, or which areas to focus on if harvest doesn’t go as planned.

PRO TIP: FBN members can upload data from over 25 different monitor types to be cleaned, stored, and mapped. Do you use multiple precision monitor systems on your farm? Does your farm operate a John Deere Tractor with Trimble Steering and a Precision Planting 20/20 planter monitor, along with a Cat Challenger with Trimble Steering and Case IH Display and a Case Combine to top it all off? Not a problem! We have plenty of farmers on the system that use a wide variety of precision equipment on their farm and use FBN to finally see all of their field maps in one place.

Coordinate Harvest to Optimize Moisture

Use Drydown Percentage and Crop Moisture Maps to fine tune your harvest plans. This information will also allow you to confidently make decisions about dryer and storage capacity with a strong understanding of past performance on each field. Plus, you’ll have the additional information from FBN weather insights to add insight for your harvest strategy.

WITH THE COMPARE MAPS TOOL, YOU CAN EASILY COMPARE YOUR YIELD, PLANTING, FERTILIZER, SPRAYING AND ELEVATION MAPS.

Two map layers can visually reveal correlations for poor or excellent yield and much more. Simply moving the compare slider left to right will display one map layer over the other.

Using FBN Maps, you can look at a wide variety of maps of your farm.

The Power of Combining Precision Maps with Satellite Imagery

The combined precision mapping and satellite imagery tools available from FBN create a powerful tool to give you the big picture of what is actually happening in your fields throughout the growing season.

There was a time when new technology being introduced for farmers seemed more like fancy (and expensive) toys than tools, but precision mapping and satellite imagery are operational tools that you can actually use it (right now!) to your advantage.

As the phrase goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” and these tools help you to actually see and easily understand what may be impacting your yield and performance. You can dive into them quickly by comparing various map layers, image types and years of aggregated, anonymized data.
